How would I go about troubleshooting a computer that freezes or shuts
off at the same time everynight?

I've checked the Event Viewer, it had a problem with the 3Com NIC but
that does not come up anymore but the freeze still happens. Where to
next?

You need to tell us a lot more, e.g.
- What does freeze mean? Unresponsive keyboard? Unresponsive
mouse?
- What applications are running at the time?
- Does it always happen at the same time? What time?
- Does it happen every night without exception?

The keyboard's Num Lock works but everything else seems unresponsive.
I can't tell if the mouse is working because the screen is black.

There are a bunch of proprietary applications running.

It's been happening around 11 pm or so for the past week. It has never
happened since then. We have been having power problems in that area
but a UPS is there and it hasn't show any signs of faltering.

I would install WinVNC on this machine and configure it as
a host. This would allow me to check the machine from some
other networked machine, even when the screen is black.

Well, you could try moving to a warmer climate.
