I go into my start and task bar settings and change what notification icons
to hide and wheater I click OK or APPLY it don't matter the computer freezes
up. If I just click on the X to close the window, the changes don't get
made. Can you help me find out why my computer is doing that. I have
Windows XP Home Eddition with no updates from Microsoft as of yet and I know
a good bit about computers but have never encountered this problem.

If you have "no updates from Microsoft" your operating system is
dangerously vulnerable to attack and may well be infected. A person who
claims to know "a good bit about computers" wouldn't leave their
computer exposed.

You may find additional information on the matter at hand in Event Viewer.

I understand the major importance of updates, anti-virus, spy ware, and other
protecctive type programs so just so you know about 3 weeks ago I had all the
updates from Microsoft's update site and a program calling itself "Security
Center" showing icons and logo's looking like Microsoft software poped up and
locked up my computer. I could do nothing to close it or do anything else
with my computer. I had a new blank hard drive larger than the one already
installed, so I took out the hard drive I had and put in the new one and
reloaded my software from the disks HP provided me with. After the software
was ran and I was finally at the desk top I clicked on the task bar and
selected properties. I then chose the classic menu style and selected Hide
Icons. I chose what icons to hide or show then clicked APPLY and the
computer froze up. I had to do a control, alt, and delete and tell the
computer to end task on the task bar and start menu customize application. I
tried doing this many times with the same results. Remember this is after
just installing a new primary hard drive and installing the original setup
disks for our particular computer. I just got to the desktop for the first
time with the new hard drive in and had not even installed the software for
my internet company (Juno). So I know how important updates, anti-virus, and
other protective software is. I'm just starting the computer from scratch so
I had not been able to go online at the time. Now I am and I'm trying to get
updates from Microsoft starting with SP1 and the first time I tried to get
that the computer froze on the install phase of the update. That's a whole
other problem probably related to me needing updates from Microsoft.

I solved my problem by just getting a new hard drive and already got most
updates and my computer is working better than it ever worked. Thanks for
all your input because it was helpfull. I know I need updates to make my
computer run better and be better protected. Thanks again.
