Completed my Microsoft Certified IT Professional - Enterprise Administrator qualification last week. Also have a Computer Studies degree. Worked in IT Support for around two years but would really like to get into Computer Forensics. Anyone know any career paths?

Computer Forensics Careers

Computer Forensics Careers can be long lived, well paid and fulfilling. There are some pitfalls, some places where good money can be earned and some places where expectations are higher than reality. Starting salaries for Post Grads are around £16 - £18K. A qualified analyst will typically earn £24K, where as an experienced analyst can earn around £30 – 35K. Forensic Accountants can earn up to £60k in a managerial role. Salary is often relevant to the specific geographic situation too, so take that into consideration.

Examples of where a computer forensics analyst can be employed include:

Government Agencies:
Police Forces
Intelligence Agencies
Computer Investigation Departments

Accountancy Companies:
Companies that have an e-Discovery department

Defence Companies:
Solicitors

HR Departments:
Computer Misuse
Inappropriate Email Use
IT Related Tribunals

Private Companies:
Assisting solicitors by providing defences for IT related Crimes Corporate Investigations Civil Investigations

If you are considering a career in computer forensics and wish to join a police force, you should take into consideration that you will pretty much be sure to be involved with ICI’s, (Indecent Child Images), or Child Pornography and as such must be prepared for the psychological problems that this can lead too.
