Every once in a while my computer emits a loud "bwoop, bwoop" from the
sound card. Can't figure where it's coming from. I'm running McAfee
anti-virus and Zone Alarm Pro. I originally assumed it was one or the
other telling me about a found virus or hacker intrusion, but neither
program is giving me any visual dialog or alert. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yellow Alert! Yellow Alert! Scotty, raise the shields!
Seriously, are you running any instant messenger
programs? They are a likely cause of intermittant
bwooping..
Try making a list of stuff that's running in the
background of the computer, and selectively turning them
off for a while to see if you're bwoop-free.
Thanks, you made my day... grin...

One thing you can do is look at your task tray to see what
icons are there, many of these background programs put an
icon there.
Take a look in your Startup folder and see what's
automatically starting up with windows.
But, that's not the only place to look for windows startup
programs, try this handy utility form sysinternals.com
which shows you ALL the stuff set to startup with windows:
Autoruns:

Hah! Yep, you're right -- it's the same sound as when a Klingon
battlecruiser is picked up by the Enterprise's sensors!

I wish I knew enough to go into Task Manager | Processes and be able to
know what everything is and say: yep I need that, nope that's
questionable where did that come from.... Can you suggest any resources
that would help me identify all these various Windows processes?

But looking on the Applications tab I don't see anything running in the
'background'. I don't run any IM apps.

Back to the bridge...

is it from the sound card or pc speaker
it could be the CPU overheating, I suggest you check your
cooling fans ASAP

It's from the sound card; I don't have external speakers hooked up.

Why would the CPU emit this sound if it's overheating? Is it a standard
"help, I'm overheating!" sound for CPU's to make?

Thanks for your help.

Kinda thought it might be something like that... grin.
Change it to a nice unobtrusive zzzt or something lol

Oh man -- false alarm. Last week I downloaded and installed PestPatrol
that's supposed to check for trojans, web pests, spyware, etc. It has a
component called CookiePatrol. Apparently every time it finds a
spywhere cookie, it deletes and BWOOPs you to let you know about it.
