when I added an external dvd-rw the computer reconizes it as a rom. When I
go into the device manager, it says it is DVD rw, but in My Computer it is
only a DVD/cd rw. I have been unable to write to DVD due to this problem. How
do I fix this problem?

Search for and install a bona fide application that has the
capability of writing to DVD drives. Writing to DVD drives
is not natively supported by Windows XP.

does bona fide application mean Nero
if it does Nero would not reconize the drive as dvd-rw either

Can't tell you. Don't use Nero although a stripped down
version of Nero was provided with the DVD-RW drive. Roxio
Easy CD and Easy DVD Creator does recognize the DVD drive.
So do some shareware products that can be downloaded off
the Internet.

Double click on My Computer.

Right click on the DVD drive in question and click on Properties. In the
Recording tab, is Enable Recording on this drive checked?
