After I installed security updates from MS, I received a black screen with
white letters informing me my computer didn't start successfully. It gave me
the options of retrying, retrying with previous configuration, or safe mode.
It took several tries to restart my computer. I used System Restore to
return to the pre-download state. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hello VerLynn,
perhaps there is not a known issue that any MS update has prevented computer
from restarting but this can happen after installing Windows XP SP1 or SP2.
If that be the case then go here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828744
for SP1 issue. For SP2 it is recomended to obtain a bios update of your
motherboard, you may go here

for suggestions
and if nothing above is true try to remember whether you installed any other
software before that happened for the first time, even if not there may be
any third party software with which the recent update has any interference.
