Update your sound driver from the manufacturer's web page (Realtek obviously - might try the computer manufacturer's web page if this is a Dell/Gateway/HP/IBM or some large vendor like that.)

As a test, try lowering sound hardware acceleration. Open Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio tab, Advanced button, Performance tab.
