Computer crashes after Win2K installation

I am setting up a Win2K-SP4 computer in a brand new HD, SATA, in a brand
new computer.
After I completed the OS installation and the motherboard (ECS nForce)
drivers, the programs installed by the Win-2K (like Internet connection
Wizard, Windows Explorer, IE 5) woked fine. Updating IE5 to IE6 (using
its upgrading file in a disk) had no problem. In fact, I had no problem
in connecting to Internet through IE6.

My problem is this:
As soon as I attempted to install additional programs, like Mozilla Fire
Fox or Thunderbird or unzip program or any external source program, the
computer crashes. The computer also crashes as soon as I opened
Cnt-Pnl/Add-Remove while I did not have any problem in opening and using
Display for setting.

All means exhausted, I finally decided to re-install a fresh copy of
Win2K AFTER re-formatting the partition (followed by installation of the
motherboard drivers), but the problem repeated itself.

Perhaps this is due to Windows bug? Perhaps the motherboard drivers
messed up the Windows' original system files?

I am totally puzzled and exasperated.

Please help.

What error codes are you getting? Is there any information in the event
viewer to guide diagnosis?

I would suspect bad drivers, was it OK before you installed the makers
drivers?

What size is the new SATA drive?
Is it > 128 GB?
If so then the FIRST thing you need to do after the base install is enable
48-bit LBA.

This particular drive is Hitachi Deskstar SATA 250GB, of which two
partitions were created: One with 80 GB for Win2K Japanese and the other
with 50 GB for Win2K English, and the remaining is not used. Both are
NTFL. Everything works fine when Japanese (partition 1)is used. The
problem is experienced only when the computer is booted to Win2K English
(Partition 2). As I stated earlier, the problem occurs only when I try
to install additional programs and when I launch the
Ctrl-Pnl/Add-Remove-Progrms.The Win-installed programs like EI show no
problems.

With less than 128GB partition size, do I still need to enable 48-bit
LBA? If so, how?

hanks for reply.

No error code. The computer simply crashes (freeze) mandating reboot.

The drive (Hitachi SATA) is a brand-new SATA HDD. The drive is set up
for a dual boot and the other partition works fine. The problem reccurs
even after re-formatting and re-installation as stated above. So it is
unlikely that this is a hardware problem.
If the drivers are the cause of the problem, it must be motherboard
drivers including HD-controller operation. But how would I know?

Did you F6 and supply the correct controller driver during text mode portion
of setup?

Um! This is an interesting one. I've noticed that on replying to you a
notice flashed up on my PC about translating Jap characters.

Perhaps few people will come back to see this message this late, but
just in case----I finally found out what was the problem. It was the
defective display adaptor!! After I replaced it with another, everything
works normally.
I thank to all repondents for trying help me. Thanks again.
