I was wondering what, in your opinion, are the best cases on the market. I plan on building a new computer and was looking for some advice as to which case to buy.

Thanks,

Eric

Sorry about the text! That's a nice case. I was looking for something
sleeker, with a more sophisticated look to it. I would at the same time
like something with side panel windows to show possible case mods in the
interior, but that is still questionable. Maybe something that is metallic
or shiny black in coloration would suffice. Do you reccomend any?

Thanks again,

Eric

Antec Sonata. No Window, but it is black, shiny and sophisticated.

I'm quite pleased with the XPider blue server tower.
http://www.amamax.com/cases-atxfulltower.html I have the Amatex one, but
not the Amatex one hehe. I bought the Xpider, directly, not from someone
that modded it like Thermaltake. It's a basic template.

Thermaltake and Coolance use the same template case. Very nice front intake
area and back exhaust. Side fan is sweet for Radeons and their very hot
memory! Shop around. All the same case, basically, just sold by different
co's for different prices. Of course, the Xaser has a bunch of eye candy,
etc... A google for 'xpider' will yield many hits to various cases like
it.

I'm looking for a decent

- mid-tower case,
- are there still any with additional *real* front mains power push button
switch?
- no futuristic spaceship or plastic-warrior design (simple plain front
preferred)
- possibly sound-, USB- and FireWire front sockets (preferred not to be at
the bottom of the case)
- buttons/controls, indicators preferred to be besides the drive bay area and
*not* below it
- industry gray or moderate 2 colour design
- removable mobo tray preferred
- no-gimmicks (windows,lights, LED-fans, and such)),
- 4, better 5 5-1/4" and
- 2, better 3 3-1/2" bays external
- >= 2 3-1/2" bays internal
- SMPS >=350W (are there still any ATX SMPS with built in power socket for
monitor as it was common with AT types?)
- price w. S/H not exceeding some $50

Is anybody aware of something that comes close to a majority of my preferences?

You will find a shitload of cool cases here
http://makeashorterlink.com/?Q1C226866

Of course you should do a Google search on the model and "review" for any
you're interested in.

Any case with a built in 350W power supply and costing $50 or less with
shipping included is going to be really excellent - as a boat anchor. Even
then one of the sharp edges will probably slice your finger off just for
spite as you toss it overboard. What are you thinking?

Not really but have a look at any new Globalwins as they make quality
gear.
http://www.globalwinusa.com/products/index.html
Excellent finish and design and NO sharp edges. They also came with a
neat little bonus that I had not seen before. The case screws are
actually a thumb screw(not the medieval type<grin>) so you don't even
need a screw driver to remove the case screws :)

No, ATA supplies alomost alwaye have the mains encased inside. Good
ones will have a mains switch on the rear.
- no futuristic spaceship or plastic-warrior design (simple plain front
preferred)
- possibly sound-, USB- and FireWire front sockets (preferred not to be at
the bottom of the case)

You can get a bay front with the jacks.
- buttons/controls, indicators preferred to be besides the drive bay area and
*not* below it

Doesn't matter, as that outlet would be continually on, as far as soft
power goes.

I personally like the Antec 1080 with its 430 Watt True-Power PSU. 430 REAL Watts. Very good value for the money, lots of easy access bays and plenty of case fans. $129.

I'll check it out when I go to the dump this am. It'll be a good
debugging project for the winter as probably nothing will operate very
well.

I heard Antec cases were really solid ones. I was thinking about possibly buying one. Are there any besides Antec that provide a sleek, sophisticated look (preferably black or metallic)? Also, are Antec cases good for modding the interior?

Thanks again,

You can get a bay front with the jacks.

.... but this will cost me one 5.25" bay.
Doesn't matter, as that outlet would be continually on, as far as soft
power goes.

.... which wouldn't matter for monitors with power managemnet.
And to be able to completely turn power off (after some rewiring of the ATX
SMPS), my question for the front plate AT-style power switch.

Wolfi

I found a decent-looking case at a computer show that has a 350ps and 4
front 5.25 bays, it also as USB and firewire ports in front at the
bottom. It was a little less than $30 with tax.
