Computer calls on most reboots.

I know this is strange, but, when I restart my computer it calls out on the
modem. It does not seem to go to my isp and dialup networking does not come
up.

I have Windows 2K with SP3 installed.

How do I find out what is using my modem to make a short call?

Thanks

John - possible reasons:
- [benevolent] some applications will check for updates at system start.
Among these are antivirus and the like. See what processes are set to
start automatically at boot.
- [not so benevolent, and sometimes dangerous] spyware, adware, and
viruses. Try running "Spybot" and "Ad-aware"; both free ownloads. I
assume you have a good antivirus app, always active.
- then, as another poster says, there's always Microsoft's little tools
that 'help.'

John,

Has your hardware vendor installed special software that will "dial home"
after a crash to let them know that something is wrong? Back in my days
(long ago) as a OpenVMS System Manager, OpenVMS would automatically call out
and log a field service call if it detected any hardware issues.
