Hi and thank you for paying attention to my question!
I have Windows XP workstations in a winserv 2003 domain level and win2k
forest.
On many of these I see the event ID 7023 listed fairly frequently, with
message: "The computer browser service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired."
In addition when using computer management snapin to connect to another
computer I see the following messages when attempting to expand the Event
Viewer logs: "Unable to connect to the computer [compname] . The error was:
The network path was not found."
At other times when attempting this I have seen this error:
"The format of the specified computer name is invalid".
The computers in question are part of the domain and can succesfully access
resources in the network, locally and across the WAN on two remote sites.
Can you please give me any hints on how to start addressing these issues?
Thanks very much!

Thank you! I suspected firewall involvement but for some reason could not
find this article! I wish the hotfix was available for download at users'
risk without the need for a call to microsoft.. afterall if it kills the
computer I can always reimage..
Thanks again!

You're welcome. Microsoft doesn't like to, and usually doesn't make
hotfix available unless they are fully tested. Applying these fixes to
computers that don't need them could lead to unforeseen problems. While
you might know how to re-image and get out of a predicament think of the
masses who barely know how to turn a computer on.
