Hi,

Windows 2000 Domain, one Windows 2000 master DC, another Windows 2000
DC and a Windows 2000 Terminal Server.
Around twenty PC's all either Win2K or WinXp Pro.

One of the PC's is having browser elections with the master DC.
Its a laptop and its benn doing it for about three weeks.
This may have coincided with the user setting up a BT Broadband USB
device which he uses at home to get on the internet in order to VPN
into the office.
When he comes in the office the BT software all loads in the
background even though the USB device isn;t present, might be a red
herring...

What is the best way of setting up the Computer Browser service on the
network as detailed at the top of the page ?

I've seen posts suggesting disabling Computer Browser on everything
except the master DC..

Jim.

I would start with disabling the computer browser service on the problem computer and
maybe all to XP Pro computers if the problem still persists. The browse service uses
"backup browsers" also to help take the load off of the master browser which refers
clients to a backup browser to retrieve the browse list. I would not suggest
disabling it on all computers other than the pdc fsmo DC however. --- Steve

browse service.

The NetBIOS network should have a Backup Browser for every 34 machines. If
the network is a mix of W2k and XP, you definitely should disable Computer
Browser service on all the XPs, because XP occasionally wins the elections
over W2k PDC role holder (Master Browser) server. Your both additional DC
and TS server could be the Backup Browsers and you can disable Computer
Browser service on all the workstations.
Laptops travelling between W2k office domain and home workgroup are a real
PITA.
