Computer boots then freezes

Hi,
I did my latest 'updates from windows' and that was the
last addition I have done for my computer.
Now when I turn my computer on it seems to do a scan of
the 'E' drive (my CD drive) and then brings me to the
desktop and then freezes. I get vertical lines on my
monitor and it won't respond to me moving the mouse,
pressing keys or ctrl + alt + del.
That's the farthest I've gotten.
Other times, the monitor will turn on at startup but it
will be a black screen, that once the computer has booted
up after going 'beeeep beep beep', will just
automatically turn itself off while the computer is still
on.
I really need to know the severity of this.
I appreciate anyone's help.
Thanks, Jess

Try starting in Safe Mode. Press F8 after the POST screens and before
Windows starts to load. The time slice is small so it may take a few tries
to get the Advanced Start Menu to appear. Some folks have success by
tapping F8 during the boot process.

Select the Safe Mode option from the Advanced Start Menu. If using XP Home,
log on with username: Administrator password: leave blank unless you have
assigned one for this account

Does the monitor work okay in Safe Mode?
Other times, the monitor will turn on at startup but it

The beeps are coming from BIOS. The pattern of the beeps designates a
particular error type with the basic hardware or its configuration (Windows
is not involved at this point). The "beep codes" are different from one
manufacturer to the next. Check your system manual for a list where you can
discover the corresponding problem.

Since you have such a pronounced problem with display being delivered to
the monitor, likely possibilities are :
o The display adapter card is not seated properly
o The connection between the monitor and the display adapter is not
secure or the cable is faulty.
