Often when I open a media file (I think this is when this
starts), my computer will freeze or pause periodically, at
intervals of about 1.5 seconds or so, for about a half
second, continuously until I restart the machine. What I
mean by feeze is that the media will jump in place for the
half second and my mouse pointer will be frozen. I assume
that other processes freeze as well though there is no way
for me to really know. The problem has become very
frustrating and I was wondering if anyone has had this
problem and what they may have found as the cause.

Thanks,
Chuck

Run your antivisrus, a trojan cleaner, AdAware, Spybot and delete whatever
they all find.

What are the specs of your PC ? How much memory ?

See this website about saving resources at boot-up :

I have eliminated the possibility of external wares or
viruses by formatting and reinstalling only purchased or
bundled software (nothing downloaded) and being
disconnected from any network or internet since I
formatted that computer. The problem still occurs whether
Win XP or Win 2000 is the operating system. I suspect it
could be a hardware conflict, but I have installed only
the minimum hardware components needed to run the machine
(plus the sound card) and cannot find any apparent
conflicts using Windows' diagnostic tools. Thank you for
your suggestions, though.

As for the specs, I am using 256Mb of ram with an Athlon
1.2Gb processor, a sound card built into the motherboard
which is installed but not in use, and a creative live
sound card which is in use. I don't recall the video card
as it is not this machine.

Thanks

Chuck
