Computer automatically restarts itself. I use WindowsXp
professional. XP tells me
it's caused by device driver. Suspect it's an new monitor
recently installed. Have deleted it. Problem
still occurs - more and more frequently. How do I fix
this?

Hi Amy,

Two things come to mind:

1. Have you checked to see if it's a virus infection?
The recent W32.Blaster worm is known to cause computers
to reboot automatically.

2. You can try a "Last Known Good" (press F8 while
booting, before the Windows logo screen, and you should
get to a start-up menu which includes this) or "System
Restore" (check your "Help" for information about how to
do this) if it is a faulty driver that is causing this,
since they will go back to a previous operating system
state which will clean out the problem. This does not
affect any data (i.e. e-mails, files, etc.) but will
affect any recent changes you made to the operating
system... you may need to re-install recent hardware /
O/S changes that you want.

Hi, Amy.

As we all know, many computer problems are cured by simply rebooting.
Because of this, WinXP is set, be default, to Automatically restart on
System failure. However, when a reboot does not fix things, we are left
with no clue as to what is wrong.

Go to System Properties | Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings. Remove
the check from the Automatically restart line.

Next time, instead of rebooting, your computer should halt with a BSOD (Blue
Screen of Death) full of cryptic codes. You'll have plenty of time to copy
those down verbatim before you press the Reset button to restart your
computer. Post those codes here and some guru (not me!) can help you
interpret them.
