Is there any way of finding out what program wants to access the internet
whenever the computer is switched on.

Install a personal firewall application. like ZoneAlarm (application-based
firewall). Gives complete control.

I installed zone alarm but my computer still is accesing the internet. I
have checked the programs but I can't determine which one is the culprit.

Hi Wayne,

If you are referring to the "bytes transferred" notification in the system
tray, it can be due to several reasons. If there is a huge transfer without
user activity and no applications running, it may be due to "Automatic
Windows Updates" service or BITS.

Disable AutomaticUpdates service and try again.

Also, open a DOS box and type "netstat -o" to see which process is accessing
the internet currently. Map the process ID with that shown in Task Manager.
