Computer A "disappears" when computer B suspends or reconnects

We have a small Win2000 network. When I boot up my laptop, all is well. I
can see other computers on the network and their drives and printers. If my
laptop goes into suspend (closing the lid) or if I disconnect and try to
reconnect, ONE of the computers on my network effectively disappears. To see
its drives or print to it, I have to reboot the laptop. Because the
disappearing computer is my main desktop, I have to reboot repeatedly.

Now here is an added complication: the main computer actually doesn't
disappear entirely. One of the programs on my laptop connects automatically
to a shared directory on the main computer. For some reason, even when the
main computer disappears for all other purposes, the main computer icon and
that shared directory still appears in network neighborhood and the explorer
file manager. So, whereas all other computers appear normally, with all
their drives and printers, the main computer appears with only one directory
showing. If I reboot the laptop, the main computer appears normally again,
including all drives and printers.

Any suggestions?

Richard, the files you are seeing on the desktop could be just the
offline files cached on your laptop, perhaps you should disable
offline files on the laptop and try it and give us a little more info

when the desktop disapears, can you ping it? go to a command prompt
and type
ping thenameofthedesktop
see if you get a response.

good luck, let us know, --Lehi

I'm seeing the same sort of thing happenig on my home network. I can ping
all of the machines on the lan but it up to the gods as to whether they'll
appear in explorer. Using ME,2000 and XP. No rhyme or reason.

Anyone shed some light.
