I have a 3.5 year old HP that originaly came with 98 SE and upgraded to XP.
It is set to automaitcaly go into stand by after 5 min. And sometimes the
power will turn off when it it coming awake. Is this a hardware or software
problem. If it is a hardware problem it would it have something to do with
the heat, I am in Oklahoma and our highs have been in upper 90-low 100 and
the comp room has been around 85. Could it just be over heating?

Thanks,
Brian Mullins

Hi, Brian.

(A fellow Okie here, although I live in Texas now. I was in LeFlore County
last week. Boomer! Sooner!)

The heat definitely could cause such reboots. Or they could be caused by
other hardware problems, all the way from loose connections to bad RAM to
.... well, just about anything.

If it is a software problem, you can start tracking it down by changing the
default setting for "what to do on system failure". Go to System Properties
| Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings, and remove the check from the
box under System failure that says to Automatically restart.

Next time, if it is a software problem, instead of rebooting, the computer
will halt with a BSOD with codes that should help you track down the
problems. Post those codes here and somebody should be able to point you in
the right direction.
