compromised graphics and video display for regular users

Gary

All of a sudden, I couldn't view videos in Win 2000. The
sound output was fine. All I saw was a blank screen where
the video had been before.

Moreover, the Windows Media Player terminated as soon as
it started. The control panel displayed the icons on the
far left, separated by a white line from the rest of the
window, which was empty.

None of this happened while I was logged in as
administrator.

After running a spyware and anti-virus program without
fixing the problem, I solved the problem temporarily by
added myself to the administrator group. Now I can run all
programs without incident.

What could be the explanation for these problems? I'd like
to maintain system security as before, but I do want to be
able to have unimpeded access to the display as a regular
user.

Thank you very much for your help, Steven. I reset the
security settings and it solved the problem. It seems odd
to me that one command would do that, but it appears to be
an enhancement only found in NTFS.

I suppose a command like the one you suggested (described
in the MS knowledge base) is designed to repair just this
kind of damage.

Try creating a new user to see if it happens which will generate a new profile. If
that does not help try resetting security settings to default defined levels as
described in the link below which should also reset
registry and ntfs permissions as

Hi Gary.

I was not sure that it would work, but obviously you had ntfs/registry
permissions changed somewhere along the line and using secedit as described also
changed your ntfs/registry permissions back to default defined levels. Glad it
worked and thanks for posting back the results. --- Steve
