Aha!

Not much use then if one has not already turned it on.

However, when I start Disk Cleanup it tells me "Compress old files" -- and
keeps compressing.

How Come?

Confusing.

Are there disadvantages to compressing the C:\ Drive?

Thanks.

Right click a disk drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties. You'll
see this option on the General tab. Note: turning on Compression does not
compress files already on the disk. It applies only to new files/folders
that are created after you turn compression on.

Disk Cleanup is a different function. It will only compress selected files based on how often the file has been used. The option on how long to wait before compressing a file can be set by selecting Compress Old Files and clicking the Options button in Disk Cleanup.

Foolish - Disk space is soooo cheap. Why would you want to envoke
compression and slow things down?
