How do you compress music(or other) files so they are
small enough to mail?
I've gone to Properties and checked off the "compress
contents to conserve disc space" box. The file did turn a
color like it's supposed to but the file(which is just
one song) seems to still be the same size.
Outlook Express or my other email accts. return it
saying "Sorry your message to _____ cannot be delivered
because it is too large". It also says in there
that "this is a permanent error" which is scaring me!
What do I do?
I just don't understand what it is I'm doing wrong all I
wanna do is email a funny song to a friend.
Can someone help PLEASE??!!

Most music is already in compressed form and further compression will not
get you anything. You could re-encode the music at a very low bit rate to
get the file size down, but it would sound like crap. You could use a
messenger program to do a direct file transfer.

you might try to compress the file in mono and a VBR to
get the smallest file size MP3 = 10:1 compression
WMA VBR mono = 45:1 compression
VBR- Varible bit rate

VBR would be best in compressing your mp3's if you want to keep
quality .But not always. I found sometimes VBR didn't shrink the size.
Confusing... :)
If you just want to email them regrdless quality loss, you may
resample them. There're a batch of them. here is one I prefer: Ufony
from http://www.softe.net
For example: your mp3 is with 44100khz 16bit stereo 128kbps, you may
resample it as 22050khz 16bit mono 32khz, the new size is 1/4 of the
old one.Of course the quality is much worse...But it dosen't matter if
you can accpect its quality. Then is' easy to transer via email.
because most email servers don't allow email larger than 1MB. If your
email is still larger the 1MB, you may use WinRar(very nice!) to
splitter it into smaller ones.
