Can someone please tell me how i can use windows xp backup programe and
compress the files at the same time? In the help file it says the files can
be compressed when backing up but when I go to use the back up program it
doesnt mention compression. Any help would be appreciated.

From XP HELP:

To set advanced backup options
1. Open Backup.
The Backup Utility Wizard starts by default, unless it is disabled.
2. Click the Advanced Mode button in the Backup Utility Wizard.
3. Click the Backup tab and select the files and folders you want to back
up.
4. Click Start Backup.
5. On the Backup Job Information dialog box, click Advanced.
6. Set the advanced backup options you want, and then click OK. See the
Notes section for a description of each option.

[[Selecting If possible, compress the backup data to save space compresses
the data you are backing up so you can save more data on a tape. If this
option is disabled, you do not have a tape drive on your computer or your
tape drive cannot handle compressed data.]]

Thanks for the info Wes. However when I go to the advanced backup menu the
compress data menu isnt there . I am backing my files to a second hard drive
would this pose a problem. Or is there a way I can add the compress file to
the menu. Thanks again.

Is your drive formatted FAT32 or NTFS?

I don't use NTBackup, but you can't compress a FAT32 drive.

NTFS compression
• If you do not have an NTFS drive, this option is not available. To
determine whether your drive is formatted with NTFS, open My Computer,
right-click a drive, and then click Properties. The file system is indicated
on the General tab.

NTBackup can only enable compression for those tape drives that
support compression. NTBackup does not compress data by itself,
therefore you cannot compress NTBackup output if your destination is a
file.

However, you can enable compression on a NTFS folder as it was pointed
out above.

Sorry guys but all my drives are NTFS but in the advanced Backup there is no
mention of compression. Cant understand why. Maybe I should be looking at
another program which may do this for me. Thanks for your help. Any
suggestions out there.
