I have some Powerpoint 97 files that are huge. What's the best way to
compress these? (I'm still using Powerpoint 97) Most of the solutions to
this problem seem to require a later version of Powerpoint.

Images should be resized prior to inserting into a ppt presentation. That,
if you have images, is the best way to ensure that the file size remains as
small as possible. Anything embedded into a ppt presentation will increase
the size of the file by the same size or slightly larger than the file's
size on disk.

While there are many reported PPT resizers on the market, I have never used
any so I can't vouch for their usefulness. One suggestion that can be made
is if you don't need to control the ppt presentation when it is given but
simply run it with timed transitions is to convert to a video format file
and show that file. There are many good ppt to video converters on the
market.

Are the images compressed prior their insrtion?
I use PixResizer

NXPowerLite is unreal. It shrinks file at least 50%. What a find. Thank you.

This has good information about right-sizing your presentations.

Why are my PowerPoint files so big? What can I do about it?

Third-party optimizers I've tried include

PPTools Optimizer http://www.pptools.com
NXPowerLite http://www.nxpowerlite.com

Both do a good job.
