Compress project and retain clips

I mistakenly captured a video in dvi format, and its taken up all my
disk space.

I used movie maker to compress it to a WMV, but it loses the clips.
When I rebuild clips, it creates 10 times as many as the original capture.

How to I turn my original capture into a wmv without losing the clips?
Otherwise, it will be too hard to edit the video.

Well you could create the clips manually or in timed segments instead of
relying on WMM to split the clips for you.
