I'm sick of this. Why it hasn't changed is beyond me. Maybe I'm the only
person this happens to, maybe Microsoft employees don't multitask on their
computers? Who knows...

I am downloading 1.8 Gb file in Internet Explorer. It finishes and starts
copying from the temp directory to the Desktop, where I asked it to be saved.

Except, at this exact moment, I am writing an email, and I press the space
bar... the copy dialog has popped up in front of my email and taken focus
without my consent, and now my pressing of the space bar has cancelled my
download! It has even been deleted from my temporary internet files. Needless
to say, the space never made it to my email either.

Way to go Microsoft. This is one way to get rid of users. Seriously wishing
I had not paid for this now.

Yes, very annoying indeed. But that's what I used TweakUI for all these
years, to "Prevent application from stealing focus". I'm sure it's a
registry switch somewhere. My Personal thought, is that it should be on by
default. I've had a few of those typing an e-mail and hit the cancel button
too. But under XP and win2k.

No, your not alone, this has plagued me for ages and annoyed me that MS
doesnt default this to a behavior that is more workable for multitasking
*ummmm, like make it stay in the background*

aplologies for slightly OT
Im not sure if you're aware that there are other download agents that do
not use the temp file method but save direct to the final directory.
One example
web downloader, but there are others

Yup.. That one's been a MAJOR annoyance to me, too.

If anyone can locate the relevant registry key, please let us know!

have YET to have this happen in Vista. used to happen in XP but the TweakUI fix seemed to help.

of course mine is a CLEAN install and not an upgrade, it may make a difference.

with Vista all I get is an ORANGE FLASHING item in the Task Bar.

That isn't the problem -- Whether you use the Temp method, an
alternately named file, or the direct file name method isn't relevant,
the problem is the popup.

same here, mine never steals focus like that.

then again I always minimize my downloads before working on anything else and I think that is the difference.

Minimized windows won't steal focus IIRC.
