im trying to find out how to completely delete jpg images
from the hard drive. let's say you've viewed a picture
of bo derek and you want to completely delete it from the
entire hard drive to avoid embarrassment. i understand
if you just delete temporary web pages, the jpg image
still remains somewhere (registry???). thanks for any
help

Empty your Temporary Internet Files cache
In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete Files.

This will delete any files downloaded when a webpage is viewed in the
temporary internet file folder. Files you have downloaded and saved will
need to be found and delete indvidually.

If you delete your temporary internet files, they do not go to the registry.
They are simply deleted. This does not mean that they are "erased" from your
hard drive. Deleted simply means that they are no longer "listed as
available to view" in your internet temporary files folder. They are still
on your hard drive. They will stay there and software can be used to recover
them. Rather easy to do. How long will they stay there? Difficult to answer,
but here is briefly how it works. The files will stay there until new files
overwrite them. Since the space reserved for these files is defined and
limited, new files will come in to overwrite the deleted files.
But even then, if someone really wants to recover them it is possible to do
but much more difficult.

Really, the only way to completely remove a file is to shred it. Software is
available for this, instead of deleting the file you shred it. This simply
means that the original file will no longer be readable.

By the way, you can automate deletion of your Internet temporary files just
by closing your browser.
In IE6, click on Tools, click on Internet options. A window will open. Click
on the Advanced tab. Scroll down to Security and check the box "Delete....
when closing browser". This will make Bo Derek transparent, but she will
not vanish from your hard drive for a while.
