Complete Backup and Restore to new hard drive on Windows 2000 Serv

I am getting prepared to install a new larger hard drive in a Windows 2000
Server. Actually I have 2 projects to do this. I am familiar with the ASR
system backup in Windows XP and 2003 Server. But in Win 2K, what is the best
way to basically clone the drive without using a $600 program like Ghost ot
other similar program.

I need to back up a drive with a 20gb C partition and there is also a 40gb D
partition. I really am not concerned with the D partition as it contains
files that can be easily copied. So I want to copy the 20gb C drive to a new
120gb drive. I will partition the new drive with a 60gb C partition and the
remaining will be the new D partition.

What is the best way to proceed ?

I don't know about Ghost but Acronis TrueImage costs far
less than $600.

If you're reluctant to spend the money then you can boot the
machine with a Bart PE boot CD and use xcopy.exe with
the appropriate switches to copy the lot across. It works
very nicely and is totally safe. Post again if you need more details.
 
True Image cost me about $40, new, on Amazon UK

I so Ghost locally for about $70. It is basically Drive Image 7
(Symantic bought Power Quest.)

Put the new drive in as a slave. Use Windows "Disk Manage" to partion
it like you want.

Install Ghost on the 20 GB and do your thing.

Will it work on a server. I tried it before and it was only for a
workstation. The server version was alot more expensive.
 
The Bart PE boot CD is your friend.

Both Western Digital and Maxtor include software with their harddrives that
will copy the old drive to the new drive. If you didn't get such a CD with
the drive, check the manufacturer's site, probably other manufacturers have
similar software available for free download.
