Hi;

This is what is get when I click on a .DOC file in an email attachment
and it comes up in Word 2000.

By way of background, I have a 4 year old Dell Dimension 733b desktop
computer which came with Word 2000 installed (as part of a Microsoft
Works package.) The installed operating system on the Dell was and is
Win 98SE.

Initially something got corrupted in Word 2000 so it would no longer
come up whenever I double clicked on a Word (.DOC) file. As I also
have Microsoft Professional Office 97, I set up a short cut to Word
97; opened that; then went back to my e-mail program; clicked on the
link and it opened right up.

However, I felt I could fix things so they would work as they were
supposed to (and did when I first got the computer for several years
even with Office 97 and Word 2000 both installed. The Excel and
Powerpoint part of Office 97 have been fine, it is just Word that has
caused problems. I fully un-installed Office 97 and Word 2000 (as
part of Office Works 2000). I even checked the Registry to make sure
they were no odd entries still remaining un-installed.

Using all the original disks and serial numbers, I first installed
Office 97. I can open a document in it but it give the above message
in a pop-up window headed by Microsoft Visual Basic. I thought that
Word 2000 might not have this error since it is newer and more
comprehensive. Unfortunately, it has the same error message.

I could live with the error message but it prevents me from saving the
file if I make any changes or corrections.

I could also go through all the un-installs and re-installs again but
I assume the error will still be there.

Any help on this would be most appreciated.

I have tried to follow the above link through Microsoft's maize of
explanation and attempted to do what was recommended. However, none
of them worked. I still have the problem of this message appearing
and the inability to save a Word 2000 document.

I do not know whether it is related but there is a long delay created
by an automatic "requested virus scan" which I am unable find where I
can turn it off. I am totally protected by Norton AV which I keep
fully up-to-date. While the compile error is the bigger issue, I
would also like to get rid of this unnecessary automatic and
time-consuming virus scan.

I have already fully un-installed Word 2000 which was installed on my
computer from Dell as part of a Microsoft Works for Win 98SE. When I
re-installed it, the "Compile Error" was still there. This suggests a
problem in the Registry. I would gladly un-install and re-install
again but I am fairly certain the problem would still be there.

Any advice on how to deal with either issue would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Uninstall Word 2000. Go to the MS support site and download eraser2000.exe
which when run will remove all vestiges of Word 2000 including all the
registry entries.

DISABLE NORTON ANTI VIRUS. Install Word 2000 again. Test Word 2000. If it is
now OK, enable Norton AV but open it and under Options, DISABLE the Office
Plug-in. Test Word again.

Thanks, that did the job.

However, as Microsoft warned when I went to the web page to download
erase2000.exe, it did affect my True Type fonts in other programs such
as Quicken Deluxe and my anti-spam program.

Question: Would re-installing each program separately solve the font
problem or is it more basic requiring selective re-installation or
even full installation of my Win 98SE operating system?

You shouldn't have to reinstall Windows. What has happened is that running
Eraser has removed all traces of the TrueType fonts that come with Office.
Reinstalling Office will have replaced the fonts but the other applications
don't know it. I expect that you will have to reinstall the other apps to
recreate the correct registry settings for them.
