does anyone know how to find this, either on my computer
or as an update, so that I can use some old programmes on
win 2k, where no driver updates are available?

I think you're confusing W2K with Windows XP.

Is this what you are looking for?

"HOW TO: Enable Application Compatibility-Mode Technology in Windows
2000 SP2 and SP3"

But "no driver updates" is not "application" and if there are no MS
supplied drivers, or no W2K-compatible vedor drivers you may be out of
luck.
