I have Flight Simulator 2002 and it has been working
beautifully until I down-loaded and installed Windows 2000
Service Pack 2. The initial stages of the game are
o.k....booting up, selection of aircraft etc. Whenever I
start to fly the aircraft, everything starts jumping and
fluttering. It's as if the computer is trying to catch up
with the game. I have the latest drivers for everything,
I've tried different settings, different resolutions,
different colors...literally everything, including
uninstalling and re-installing the game several times.
Some of the FAQ's I have read regarding this said to
install the latest Service Pack (Service Pack 4) which I
did. It still doesn't work. I uninstalled Service Pack 4,
but I can't uninstall Service Pack 2. It isn't even on
the "Add/Remove Program" list.
I have been in contact with the Microsoft Flight
Simulator people for a couple of weeks now, and have done
everything they have recommended. They have concluded
that the problem is with Windows 2000 Service Pack, and to
contact Microsoft Windows Support. I can't seem to be
able to contact anyone from that department. This letter
is as close as I have been able to get.
If in fact, and everything points to it, the problem
is with the Service Pack, what is the reason? Shouldn't
one Microsoft product (patch, program or whatever) be
compatible with another?
If anyone...Microsoft expert or the public...could
shine some light on this for me, I would certainly
appreciate it. And I am not above admitting that it could
be something I have done, or haven't done, that has caused
the problem. If so, then the egg is on my face. But
either way, I would appreciate help on this matter.

Thank you,
Bob Williams

Robert,

Could you reply with a copy of your DXDiag text. This would help us to try
and reproduce this issue on a system here in our lab and we'll try to help
you resolve this issue.

To reply with a dxdiag text:
Click on Start -> Run and type 'dxdiag' in the run box, then click 'Ok'.
When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window appears you will see tabs across the
top click each tab and run the diagnostic tests on each. Then click the
'Save All Information' button, which will create a text file on your system
where you specify, as in My Documents or Desktop. Open that text file, copy
the contents and paste it to a reply.

Hello Nick,
I have the information you requested, but I'm having
problems pasting it on this reply form. Could you send me
your E-Mail address so I can attach it to the message I
will send? I know it will work that way. Thanks, Bob

Bob,

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem with FS2002 and Windows
2000 Service Packs.

I received your DXDiag text and have a few questions to ask.

1) I see from your DXDiag that you have a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision
Pro. Is that connected to your computer through an audio-card gameport, or
USB?
2) Have you tried running FS2002 without a joystick? (and by that I mean
unplug the joystick from your system and remove the device from your Game
Controllers control panel applet.) Do it exhibit the same issues as with
the joystick plugged in?
3) Have you tried lowering audio or video hardware acceleration? (See below
for instructions on how to do this)

And the last note I wanted to address for now is that I noticed in your
DXDiag that your Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI is showing a Driver Version
of 5.12.0001.2065. The newest drivers from Creative for this chipset should
have a driver version of 5.12.01.5017. I don't know if you've tried these
drivers before or not, so I wanted to check. To obtain these drivers, go to
http://www.americas.creative.com/support/welcome.asp?centric=15 and click
the DOWNLOAD DRIVERS link, choose your operating system and look for "Sound
Blaster PCI cards Web Update..."

Lowering audio hardware acceleration:
Click on START->RUN, type DXDiag and hit ENTER, go to the SOUND tab, move
the slider all the way to the left to completely disable audio hardware
acceleration and retest. If this resolves your issue, move the slider one
notch to the right and retest. Repeat until issue repros again.

Lowering video hardware acceleration:
Click START->CONTROL PANEL->DISPLAY, go to the SETTINGS tab, click the
ADVANCED button and go to the TROUBLESHOOT tab. Move slider to one notch
from the left (Basic acceleration) and retest. If this resolves your issue,
move the slider one notch to the right and retest. Repeat until issue
repros again.

Please reply with any further information you have.

Hello Nick,
I tried every one of your suggestions and it didn't
have any effect.
Regarding the joystick(Sidewinder Precision Pro). I
have both an audio-card game port and a USB.I uninstalled
it from the computer USB completely and unplugged it, of
course, then I installed it using the audio-card game
port, using the same procedure. No difference either
way. At the time I am back with the computer USB. I tried
both procedures for lowering the audio and video hardware
acceleration, as per your instructions, and still no
positive results. However, I haven't checked on that
latest driver for the audio-card. I thought I had the
latest, but evidently I don't. I'll get back to you as
soon as I check it out.

Thanks again for your help, Nick.

Bob,

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear that you're still seeing the issue
occurring.

In the suggestions I made to you before, I asked if you had tried to run FS
without having the joystick attached to the system. Did you try that? Was
the behavior the same was with the joystick attached?

I'm wondering if the "jumping and fluttering" you first reported is joystick
related or not. If it is joystick related, it shouldn't happen if the
joystick is completely unplugged. If it is not joystick related, meaning it
occurs in the game even if the joystick if completely unplugged from your
system, then we need to start looking at what else could cause that behavior
in the program.

Bob,

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem with FS2002 and Windows
2000 Service Packs.

I received your DXDiag text and have a few questions to ask.

1) I see from your DXDiag that you have a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision
Pro. Is that connected to your computer through an
audio-
card gameport, or

To obtain these drivers, go to
http://www.americas.creative.com/support/welcome.asp? centric=15 and click
the DOWNLOAD DRIVERS link, choose your operating system and look for "Sound
Blaster PCI cards Web Update..."

Lowering audio hardware acceleration:
Click on START->RUN, type DXDiag and hit ENTER, go to
the
SOUND tab, move
the slider all the way to the left to completely disable audio hardware
acceleration and retest. If this resolves your issue, move the slider one
notch to the right and retest. Repeat until issue
repros
again.

Please reply with any further information you have.

I found two other aircraft simulator games that I had

you probably know is a MicroSoft product) and one called

MicroSoft product. After installing the Combat Flight
Simulator 2, the same thing started to happen. After
installing the Jane's Combat Simulator...guess what? No
fluttering or jumping. The graphics weren't too good,
because it was designed for Windows98, but never the less
it worked without any jumping or fluttering. Does this
shine any light on the problem? I hope so.

Hi Nick,
I just tried something and I thought I would let you
know what happened.
I found two other aircraft simulator games that I had
stored away. One is Combat Flight Simulator 2, (which as
you probably know is a MicroSoft product) and one called
Jane's Combat Simulations-WWII Fighters, which is not a
MicroSoft product. After installing the Combat Flight
Simulator 2, the same thing started to happen. After
installing the Jane's Combat Simulator...guess what? No
fluttering or jumping. The graphics weren't too good,
because it was designed for Windows98, but never the less
it worked without any jumping or fluttering. Does this
shine any light on the problem? I hope so.

Bob,

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear that you're still
seeing the issue
occurring.

In the suggestions I made to you before, I asked if you
had tried to run FS
without having the joystick attached to the system. Did
you try that? Was
the behavior the same was with the joystick attached?

I'm wondering if the "jumping and fluttering" you first
reported is joystick
related or not. If it is joystick related, it shouldn't
happen if the
joystick is completely unplugged. If it is not joystick
related, meaning it
occurs in the game even if the joystick if completely
unplugged from your
system, then we need to start looking at what else could
cause that behavior
in the program.

Hello Nick,
I tried every one of your suggestions and it
didn't
have any effect.
Regarding the joystick(Sidewinder Precision Pro).
I
have both an audio-card game port and a USB.I
uninstalled
it from the computer USB completely and unplugged it,
of
course, then I installed it using the audio-card game
port, using the same procedure. No difference either
way. At the time I am back with the computer USB. I
tried
both procedures for lowering the audio and video
hardware
acceleration, as per your instructions, and still no
positive results. However, I haven't checked on that
latest driver for the audio-card. I thought I had the
latest, but evidently I don't. I'll get back to
you

Thanks again for your help, Nick.

Bob,

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem
with
FS2002 and Windows
2000 Service Packs.

I received your DXDiag text and have a few questions
to
ask.

1) I see from your DXDiag that you have a Microsoft
Sidewinder Precision
Pro. Is that connected to your computer through an
audio-
card gameport, or
USB?
2) Have you tried running FS2002 without a joystick?
(and by that I mean
unplug the joystick from your system and remove the
device from your Game
Controllers control panel applet.) Do it exhibit the
same issues as with
the joystick plugged in?
3) Have you tried lowering audio or video hardware
acceleration? (See below
for instructions on how to do this)

And the last note I wanted to address for now is that
I
noticed in your
DXDiag that your Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI is
showing a Driver Version
of 5.12.0001.2065. The newest drivers from Creative
for
this chipset should
have a driver version of 5.12.01.5017. I don't know
if
you've tried these
drivers before or not, so I wanted to check. To
obtain
these drivers, go to
http://www.americas.creative.com/support/welcome.asp?
centric=15 and click
the DOWNLOAD DRIVERS link, choose your operating
system
and look for "Sound
Blaster PCI cards Web Update..."

Lowering audio hardware acceleration:
Click on START->RUN, type DXDiag and hit ENTER, go to
the
SOUND tab, move
the slider all the way to the left to completely
disable
audio hardware
acceleration and retest. If this resolves your issue,
move the slider one
notch to the right and retest. Repeat until issue
repros
again.

Lowering video hardware acceleration:
Click START->CONTROL PANEL->DISPLAY, go to the
SETTINGS
tab, click the
ADVANCED button and go to the TROUBLESHOOT tab. Move
slider to one notch
from the left (Basic acceleration) and retest. If
this
resolves your issue,
move the slider one notch to the right and retest.
Repeat until issue
repros again.

Please reply with any further information you have.

Hello Nick.
Just wanted to check to see how your repro lab was
doing regarding the problem with my flight sim game.
Thanks,
Bob Williams

Bob,

I got your e-mails yesterday and am working today to set up a repro system
similar to yours. I'll look into this and let you know what I find out.

Bob,

Whoops, my bad.

I just got you confused with another FS customer I'm working with. His name
(Bill) and issue is similar to yours and I got mixed up for a minute.

In regards to your issue, I had set up a system a few weeks back to try to
reproduce this issue, but started having problems with Windows on the system
before I even got FS 2002 installed.

It turned out to be a hardware problem that has since been resolved.

I'll go ahead and reset the system and look at this today.

Sorry if it seems I'd forgotten you.

Hello Nick.

Hello Nick
Just thought I would let you know I re-formatted my whole hard drive..I installed SP2..... WITH THE OPTION TO ARCHIVE MY FILES!...and then installed my FltSim game. It didn't work. I un-installed the SP2 and the game works beautifully. I have a friend who has the same OS as I do, and he has the latest Service Pack installed (SP4 I believe) and his FltSim game works fine. I guess my main question is......why aren't the two programs compatible working together on my OS

Bob Williams

Bob,

I'm sorry to say I can't explain why FS2002 is working for your friend but
not for you. I've tried several different scenarios on my test system here
and have not been able to reproduce your issue either. Let me show you my
steps and see if these are the exact same as the steps you were trying.

Install Windows 2000 (without service pack) onto clean hard drive.
Install all Windows Updates (except service pack).
Install NVidia display driver (version 4523, which is what you showed as
having on your system)
Install Soundblaster Audio PCI driver (version 5017, which is newer than the
version you had, but was all I could find online)
Install Flight Simulator 2002
Run Flight Simulator 2002.
Install Service Pack 2.
Check for further Windows Updates and install as necessary (except latest
service pack).
Run Flight Simulator 2002.
Install Service Pack 3.
Check for further Windows Updates and install as necessary (except latest
service pack).
Run Flight Simulator 2002.
Install Service Pack 4.
Check for further Windows Updates and install as necessary.
Run Flight Simulator 2002.

I understand you might not have access to Service Pack 3, and so that step
might not be available to you, but I wanted to take things exactly in order
to just see. At each stage, Flight Simulator 2002 ran as expected. If you
did anything differently (installed virus scanner, office suite, anything),
let me know and I'll try to repro your steps as best I can and see if we can
narrow this down for you.

Hello Nick,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I can see you have been putting a lot of effort into this problem I am having with the Service Packs. All the steps you took were correct with one exception. I have not downloaded any updates since I reformated my hard drive, because I didn't think they would be of any use unless I had a Service Pack installed (which I don't). Maybe the whole thing is just unique to my particular PC and the equipment I have. I think probably I will throw the towel in on this and just take my chances running my PC with no Service Packs or security patches. I guess the worst thing that could happen would be having to re-format my hard drive again if any viruses invade that cant be taken care of. That sure gets old after awhile though.
I want to thank you again Nick for all your time and effort you put into this problem.

Bob Williams

Bob,

I understand how you feel, believe me. We're constantly getting new system
in our lab and have to set them up with all supported Microsoft Operating
systems and keep each one up to date with all patches and service packs.
It's a very daunting task, let me tell you.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you resolve this issue.
