Compatibility Issue

My company is using MS Server 2003.
We were told that we need to upgrade our server to Vista to support our end
users who are using Vista. Is this true?

How about those using XP? Will there be any compatibility issue?

Please advise. Thanks.

Huh? Vista Server? There's no such thing and Windows Server 2008 isn't
released yet. I have a Server 2003 domain controller and Vista clients and
the only issue is file copies (as discussed to death in an earlier thread).
Server 2003 and Vista work quite well together.

Between XP and Server 2003? No. Between XP and Vista? Again the only
issue I have come across is file copies but this doesn't seem to affect
everyone.

In other words, you don't have to do anything to your server to support
Vista and XP workstations.

Not often I get to reply to a common name.
Any clue on what 'someone was told" they should upgrade to in Vista.
At this time, unless your planning on running a business on a beta version(which would be an incredibly poor decision) it may be time to find a new IT manager or a new source to handle server topics.
Server 2003 should handle your Vista units.

No, of course it isn't true. In fact, it's a blatantly absurd claim,
as there is no such thing as "Vista Server." And Vista clients can
connect to a Windows Server 2003 network without problem.

Again, the answer is "No." There can be no compatibility issues with a
non-existent OS.

What I don't understand is why you didn't ask your IT department these
questions; they'd have immediately been able to put your fears to rest.

I assume from what you said, that no one in your company knows much
about servers. The answer to your question is NO! It is absolutely false.

I does work well for me.
when I'm connected to the 2003 domain I have constant explorer not
responding error. IT was so bad my reliability rating was like at 3 or 4. I
have since disconnected from the domain and no more not responding error
reliability rating is now at 8 and climbing daily..

This may just be a configuration thing but I haven't had time to look into
it . On top of that I can't rejoin the domain ;-(

Yes, I think it is a configuration thing in your case because in my case I
have had Vista and Server 2003 DC connected for months without ANY of the
problems you refer to. In fact, although I have had Vista-specific
problems, I have had no problems in relation to the domain controller or
Server 2003 integration.

I wish I could be more helpful in resolving your problems but if you have
decided to disconnect from the domain and that works for you then perhaps
that's the way to go instead of investing a lot of time into diagnostic
work.
I'm thinking yo might ;-)

I can only speak for myself - I didn't have to do anything to get a
heterogeneous network working perfectly.
