Despite several attempts by my local computer shop personnel, my HP
Color LaserJet 2840 cannot be installed with full function to my
custom built machine with Vista Ultimate. The tech guy said a newer
model should work; I've tried finding one online with a listing for
Vista Ultimate but have not found one yet. I'd like to know the make &
model of a printer that is compatible. I'd prefer to spend less than
$1000 IF possible. Thank you.

What's missing from these drivers?? I mean, what function would not
work?

One thing I noticed in the install instructions for Vista was to power off
the printer, plug in the USB cable, and then power on the printer so Vista
can start the install procedure correctly. Apparently Vista or their
drivers must do strange things if the printer is already powered on when you
first plug in the USB cable.

If that was not the procedure done on the very first try of the install you
might want to do a system restore to a date/time prior to the first attempt
of installing the printer and then follow the instructions to the letter. I
found a copy of the instructions for Vista and your printer series at: If
you can't find a valid restore point prior to attempting to install your
printer you may have to try editing the registry to remove all entries to
the printer (difficult at best) or re-install Vista...

Note: the above is one very long single URL...

It would not be a bad idea to actually write to HP support, using their web
page, and ask them if the specific Vista drivers support the particular
feature or function you are trying to use in the printer.

Both tech support people I had try to install the 2840 could not; it
prints, SLOWLY, but does not scan or fax. The computer quits
functioning daily; it must be turned off and restarted until it senses
the printer. The Logictech mouse also goes IN & OUT. The SiliconGuide
disc I ordered does not help either. I've emailed HP, the message is
" HP Color LaserJet 2840 has been discontinued. " It was my guess the
operating system was the problem as I was told several times the HP
2840 was older than Vista Ultimate.. Microsoft responded this am, I'll
be looking at their list. I see no HP MFC listed but many Brother
models.

The date in the properties of this document, doesn't seem that old.
It is from near the end of 2007.

Vista 32 bit and Vista 64 bit are both in the list here. "Ultimate"
should not affect the core software. But you do have to know whether
you have a 32 bit or a 64 bit operating system installed, before
downloading. (A 32 bit OS, won't admit to anything, while a 64 bit
one will say "64 bit" in the system properties.)

If I try the 32 bit version, there is a 432 megabyte download available.

So it does look supported, since there is still a web page with files on it.
