If you create a file on a machine running on Vista, can you then take that
file and run it on a machine running Windows XP? Computer Lab to Classroom
issue if we don't have enough money to upgrade all computers to Vista.

If the same program is running on both machines, certainly. If different
versions of, say, Office are running then you may need to pay attention to
the file formats.
