i have xp pro and my scanner (hp 5300C) is not compatible (according to hp);
i was wondering a.) is this correct information? (i even downloaded the
updated drivers and it still doesn't "recognize the scanner); and b.) i also
have the hp deskjet 952C printer; should i uninstall the programs for both
units in order to install the dell A920 "all-in-one"????....thanks.

If HP says their scanner is not compatible with XP, I don't know why you
wouldn't believe them.

I don't know why you'd want both the 952C and the A920 installed, but
it's really your choice as to what you want to do. If you already own
the A920 and it scans, then you don't need to bother about the 5300C.

Scanners are among the most difficult peripherals to install - even with
supported drivers. If HP says it won't work, don't hold your breath.

Such situations are usually NOT hardware incompatibility, but the
manufacturer's unwillingness to support equipment that was no longer
being made when Microsoft released Windows XP. Unfortunately this
usually also applies to all the competing manufacturers. With printers
it's probably because they are wanting to discontinue the older ink tank
versions and free the manufacturing capacity to make newer versions of
ink tanks. If they can drive consumers away from older printers and
scanners they won't have to train their driver development and tech
support staff about the peculiarities of the older models.

First, there are Drivers for win XP and this scanner. Next, this is an older
scanner, and you may have problems installing the software. Finally, there
are some issues with various printer drivers.
It may make a difference if you install as a USB scanner vs a scsi scanner.
(5300 had both or different versions)

The HP docs lead me to believe that the scanner was compatable with win XP,
possibly until SP-2 came out. In any event, it looks like it will work with
WIA if installed properly.

(I haave a HP 3970 that gave me fits when I installed it.) After removing
and reinstalling, and updating software and drivers, it finally seems to be
stable, and will work with WIA and the HP drivers. Some imaging software
prefers the WIA software, others the HP drivers & software. The only problem
left is that I have a brother all in one attached to an ethernet port. It
seems that the push button to scan software picks on the image device order
rather than a specific device. As a result, pushing the scan button on the
HP may start the scan on the Brother, if it is turned on.

The brother was an equally troublesome install, esp. the fax side.
