I've asked this a few times. My understanding is that it distills down to
this:

Express editions can't

- easily create a standalone compiled DLL project easily
- only handle one language at a time

But that's just my limited understanding of the differences.

AFAIK, Express editions cannot be extended with add-ins or VSIP
packages.
