Recently a program that compared two folders and put the differences
in a third folder was mentioned. I couldn't think of a use for it but
now that I can I cannot remember it's name. Can anyone else remember
please ?

I also wanted to "nominate" a utility that I love that colours the
Folder one is at in Explorer, but I cannot remember the name of that
either. :-(

Regards, John.

A plurality of dir synch progs can do this...
Bt my guess is that you might be thinking of ThirdDir?

Hi John,

Third Dir
An unusual directory-synchronizer - the different files are copied to third
directory. It is very useful to extract e.g. new or edited photos from a
huge directory tree on fixed disk to temporary folder, then add them to
archive CD (note - the original files are compared against the CD). v1.31
~22Kb on my WinUtils5 page. or here:
http://rvas.webzdarma.cz/ThirdDir.zip

Cheers!

Rainbow Folders, maybe.

Very similar. I couldn't get that program to work on my 98SE system.
Probably because of the other already being loaded. It makes the
directory one is at coloured green in Explorer.

Now I cannot imagine ever doing without it ! :-)

Chance you were using the green .ico + .reg from David Candy's site?

| OpenFolder. This zip file contains an icon and reg* file that makes
| the current open folder in Explorer green.

| http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/images/openfolder.zip (3K)

.. . . .

Below is the reg key used, for those who might wonder that:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons]
"4"="C:\\Windows\\OpenFolder.ico"
; change paths to where you place the OpenFolder.ico file
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

.. . . .

David Candy's site, great stuff (but note req msie + js):

"Resources, tips, registry customisation, program...."
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/index.html

Download the whole site

Only remember the one doing this.

When I wrote that, I was non-thinking of the way some dupes finder progs
let you output to a third folder those files defined in various ways as
being duplicates. The only dupes finder I know of that does actually have
an option to put files defined as /different/ into a third folder, it's
CompFold <http://home.freeuk.com/mpescod/> It has a "Copy Files To.."
option, where you send the identified different files to a third dir.
Yet you can only do that command on one of the two folders at a time,
and the whole process would be a lot more multi-step than ThirDir.

In the category of backup utilities, it /seems/ that there ought to be one
or two of the more advanced ones who should give an option just like that
function of ThirDir's. I can't name any from experience, however. All I
can do, to CMA, in mind that "plurality" might mean I'm covered once I
name just one more prog, is choose to take the easy route, and name
XXCopy, since there is nothing involving files that it cannot do. Then
again, maybe that's cheating, my trying to bring in commandline tools...
Yes, I think that was it.

Especially after further thought, I'd say ThirDir easily wins for the task.
And as a standalone 32k exe, gotta dig it.
