Compare files?

I am looking for a hopefully free program that allows me to compare picture
files on my C: drive and a thumb drive.

Who has such a program?

Good morning, mate in Aussie-land.

Thanks for the link but that says all images MUST be in one folder. That
eliminates apparently checking various picture folders between 2 drives,
which is what I want to do.

Or am I wrong?

I had forgotten that, but I think you may be misinterpreting it or
they have worded it vary badly (which may be the case)
As Prismatic closed as of 28/5/06, they won't be answering any
questions.

I just checked a single folder (X, with 47 jpegs) on my C: drive
against the whole of a thumb drive (including subfolders). Thumb drive
contains a copy of folder X as well as about 50 other pics in other
folders. It matched correctly. It found a couple of duplicates I
hadn't spotted myself.

While the software does a very good job, I don't find their
terminology in menus etc. easy to follow, so read carefully.

I used Method 2, then Build primary, Build secondary, Find Dups, View
Dups.

Check out FileSync. It will compare in binary mode for bytewise
comparisons, and is good enough to be used in production.

I've used this for years and it's been very good. It can, however, have
display problems with files larger than 4 gig or so.

None are free, except the last one which is cool but only does one at a time.

From best to good:

Image Comparer 3.3 MB (Shareware - $35)
"Scans your entire collection of images, analyzes their contents and
locates files that look alike."
http://www.bolidesoft.com/imagecomparer.html

ImageDupeless 3 MB (Shareware - $30)
"The program ImageDupeless is intended for search/find of the similar
images (duplicates) in the large collections. The supported graphic
file formats are JPEG, GIF, BMP, PCX, PNG, TIFF, PGM, WMF, EMF, EPS,
PSD, ICO. The comparison is based on the contents of images, not
depending on their sizes, formats, resolutions, etc. There are
advanced opportunities of cataloguing the galleries available on CDs
and of further off-line work with them."
http://www.imagedupeless.com/en/index.html

Image Compare 3.6 MB (Shareware - $10)
"A utility for finding and deleting duplicate image files."
http://www.epsoft.com.au/software/imagecom.html

Similar Image File Finder Software 758 KB (Shareware - $20)
"Compare pictures for pixel similarities. Choose which files to send
to the Recycle Bin."
http://www.sobolsoft.com/similarimage/

Image Compare Buddy 45 KB (Freeware)
"Automatically toggle between two images so changes can be easily seen."
http://www.vsisystems.com/imagecompare.htm
*** NOTE ***
When launched, "Image Compare Buddy" displays a message window stating
that you must agree to have your home page and search page changed to
use the program. I have cracked it and uploaded it to MediaFire. When
you run the cracked version just click the YES button, nothing will
happen, except launch the program. I removed the command that launched
Internet Explorer after clicking the NO button, so clicking NO will
produce an error message.

Huh: Something looks pretty fishy about the Home Page now so I'm not
going to recommend it but if you can find Duplicate File Finder
V1.1.0.3, it's the most comprehensive, reliable and feature rich freebie
of that ilk I've ever seen. On that site it and more are listed at:
http://www.kolmic.com/Duplicate_Fil...T0z&vid=1234114235_2X01X1188591218&rpt=1&kt=4
WATCH OUT; LINE WRAPS!

I see a lot of sources for 1.1.0.2, but they don't specifically
reference XP, so I suspect the diff to .3 was XP. You can google and
find info on that easy.

The only .3 reference I can find is here:
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=283102&messageID=2699111

I'm not sure, but it looks like you can download .3 from here; at least
it indicates it runs on XP which the others do not:
http://www.topshareware.com/Duplicate-File-Finder-download-16666.htm

The ONLY reason I'm going thru all this (I'm just a user) is that its
capabilities include searching based on:
Any file type
Add your own file types is necessary

and search based on:
Contents only
size only
name only
Name and Size
Contents and Name
and allows anything from a single file/folder/drive or all
files/folders/drives and anything in between.
Has Exlude Lists and Include Lists possible
And lets you do whatever you want to do once the dupes are located and
displayed. Has a built in viewer for text and images of almost any
kind. Contents Only is very handy if you tend to move images around and
rename them.

And now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go make a CD of the downloaded
installer and put it in a jewel case. A notice on the Home Page is
warning about failure to pay for service space. And the software it
DOES list is NOT the file I have, so beware anything should you decide
to download from there.

But the program itself is top notch on my XP Pro SP3 P4 system for the
past almost three years, according to my download date.

HTH,

Twayne

Dear Twayne and everyone else confused...

Image comparison is totally different than file comparison. A single bit can cause
a file compare utility to claim them as different. An image compare utility compares
images that look similar. Make sense?
