Does anyone know why my compare and merge documents would be greyed out in
Word? I have seen several questions answered about Excel but not Word and I
am at a loss as to how to turn the option on.

Let's ask the obvious first :-): Do you have at least one document open?

It isn't an option you turn on/off - It's a feature that's available as long
as conditions are right for it to be used. If this isn't the problem please
specify which version of Word you're using.

CyberTaz,

Yes I did have a document opened, in fact I tried several to see if it had
something to do with the document I initially opened, but it seemed to be the
case with every document I tried. I am running Microsoft Word 2003. Any
ideas?

Thanks so much!

Then the next thing I would try is (assuming you haven't customized your
Menu):

Tools>Customize>Toolbars, click on the name of the Menu Bar to select it,
then click the Reset button. Once you Okay out see if the command has come
back to life.

If you've customized your Menus it would be better to remove the Compare &
Merge command, then add it back. (If you _have_ customized your Menus you
already know the where & how :)) That [hopefully] should refresh it. If the
suggestion above doesn't work, however, this may be the next option to try.
Post back if you're not familiar with doing so.

In the review tab, click Restrict Editing and make sure the doc is not restricted in any way. That enables the Compare button.
