After reformatting and installing a FULL version of WinXP
on my older COMPAQ Presario 1245 laptop, I have encountered
a few problems:
There seems to be no utility to adjust the touchpad
sensitivity and other aspects.
The automatic power-down at the end of the the Shut Down
process now must be done manually with the power button.
Any helpful ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Laptops require proprietary drivers, your reformat and
install of XP removed Compaq drivers.

See if Compaq has any XP drivers for your model, www.hp.com

It would have been helpful for you to have checked out the suitability of
your laptop for XP in advance of installing XP, using the XP compatibility
program found on the XP disk. That way you would have had some useful
information concerning any possible problems.

However, go to the Compaq website and download / install all applicable XP
drivers for your laptop. Also, click on Windows Update and download /
Install all critical updates, all Windows XP updates, and all driver
updates.

In addition, you may need to update to a newer BIOS version if one is
available. Check the Compaq website for availability. Be careful in
re-flashing your BIOS. You could end up with a door stop if you do it wrong.

When I upgraded my old Compaq laptop to XP, I was left in the same boat. My
model was using the Synaptics software before the upgrade. Compaq didn't
have an XP update for this so I tried a download from the Synaptics site
and gave it a try. It worked. YMMV.
