I just bought this used server, seems to boot fine. Bought a 36GB
drive and it seems to plug into the backplane OK but the SCSI
controller does not see it. Any clues?

Followup, the SmartStart array diagostic reports the batteries are
charging and controller is disabled. Needs 36 hours to charge. Does
this sound right? I know computers don't lie.

Well, batteries are charged. Still says there is no drive connected.
I ensured the drive is plugged in, I see the 3 lights flash at boot
up, but the array configuration utility still reports there is no
connected drive.

Any help appreciated.

Dont you have to setup in the scsi boot software?
You might also have to format it that way.
I had to with a CTRL_A, at boottime, when I was
playing with some old scsi drives from old SUN comps.
(I had an adapter for my CD burner).
Also watch out for the terminator resistors, you
might have to remove a set on your adapter card(or MB)
and (dis)activate a set on the SCSI drive(or cable).
In my case , the outgoing backplane plug was terminated
on the adaptercard, and a resistor strip had to be removed
on the adapter card before you could use the connector.
SCSI is very particular about terminating.

The server has a SCSI RAID controller so it controls the termination.
After much trying, the person who sold me the drive thinks it may be
defective. I returned it and in the meantime, I purchased 4 18GB
drives, all were recognized, the controller created one 50 GB logical
disk with RAID 5 redundency, and all if fine.
