Hi
I was working as from home for a company that became
insolvent. I purchased my laptop from the administrators
and now want to use it to connect to home workgroup and
work workgroup to use in my new job.
I tried to connect my profile to Home workgroup but only
succeeded in locking myself out as the laptop cannot
contact the now non existent domain to verify my
password. if i try to log on it says my password is
incorrect so i cannot access my local at home profile for
the old domain now either!
I know the password for the Administrator profile and so
have managed to log in to the system as the administrator
and can access all the local files from my user profile.
I can also access all the programs such as Dreamweaver
and Photoshop. For the moment i can use the laptop again
but only really as stand alone machine and with the
administrators settings. I can access the internet via a
wireless card to my router but an Ethernet connection via
the same router does not allow access to the home pc or
the internet. I would like to be able to set up the
system so that i can use the laptop as mobile access to
certain shared folders on the home desktop, the internet
and printer and take the same laptop to log into a small
peer to peer network of Windows 98 machines at work. I
would prefer to keep access to all the files in the old
domain profile on the laptop and the software that is
installed (which i can only access as the Administrator)
i am wary of trying to change the administrator settings
to try and join the home network again without advice as
i do not want to lock myself out of the only profile i
can get to work like i did with my original profile. How
do i change from a domain to a new workgroup without
access to the previous domain to verify the passwords.
Starting with a clean install is not really an option
until i can save enough for a new OS disk and i would
like to take in the system for a colleague to use in a
couple of weeks time
As i do not have either a Windows 2K disc or the original
licensed versions of the software i wish to keep (laptop
sold as seen - software discs were not recovered by the
collection firm) is there any way to retain the current
set up of the laptop but change it to work in a workgroup
with Windows XP on my home desktop and as a guest on
other networks.
