Compacting Messages in Background?

Candy

Is there a way to have messages compacting automatically in the background in
Outlook? If there is, is this a robber of virtual memory? If so, how can I
make sure this is not happening. Please enumerate steps. Thanks in advance
for your help.

Outlook doesn't do any "compacting" in the background. If you want to
compact a PST file you can; but you have to initiate that manually.

Or are you referring to AutoArchive?

Is this Outlook or Outlook Express?

I might be. I used to use Outlook Express. I'm just looking for ANYTHING
that might be the reason my Outlook seems to be slow. I'm looking for
anything that might take up memory.

Thanks,
Candy

How much RAM do you have in your machine? Outlook 2007 is MUCH
bigger/more powerful than Outlook Express so it will certainly use more
resources.

Do you see anything on the status bar at the bottom of the window that
indicates it's AutoArchive or synchronizing or anything? What
anti-virus software are you using?

Hi Ben,

For anti-virus, I am running AVG Free Edition. My computer is an emachine
with an Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 3 GHz and 446 MB RAM.

I don't recall seeing anything at the bottom saying that it is doing
anything.

You said Outlook 2007 is bigger and much more powerful than the OE I used to
use. I do tend to "hoard" emails. What is the maximum amount of emails that
you would recommend be kept in various inboxes at any one time?

446MB of RAM? That's a little on the lean side for optimal performance.
If I was looking to improve the performance of this machine the first
thing I'd do is double that.

As for maximum amount of e-mails...sort of hard to say. Since I'm
betting you're not running Windows Desktop Search anyhow I guess
indexing isn't really an issue.

You might check the Add-ins (Tools | Trust Center | Add-Ins) and see if
there's anything there (like the iTunes add-in) that you could disable.

I'd guess the biggest issue, though, is only having 512MB (actually
446MB after your video card takes its memory) of RAM.
