Have Outlook 2000 and compacting doesn't work. The file
102MB is still 102MB after compacting. Am trying to get
rid of a virus downloaded in an email (but not opened),
but the virus checker finds it even after deleting the
email and then emptying the deleted items folder. Hoping
compacting will get rid of it through encryption. Why
isn't this program written where "delete" actually means
delete instead of building a whopping file that you can't
delete without taking everything else with it??? Poor
design if you ask me...

Where exactly does the virusscanner say the virus is located?
Compacting and encryption will do nothing to get rid of a virus (why did you
think that?).

The virus checker says it's an email with the date,
sender, subject line, etc. and quarantines the outlook.pst
file. When I open the Inbox for the NTH time, there the
email is that I've deleted for the NTH time (and also
after clearing out the Deleted Items folder for the NTH)
as I've said before!!! When it quarantines the virus, it
is encrypted, so I figured this rendered it harmless. At
any rate, I still can't figure out why the deleted items
keep reappearing. I finally just exported the Inbox and
the Sent Items and deleted the entire outlook.pst file.
Sheesh...

What virusscanner are you using? Quarantining the whole pst-file is not a
healthy behaviour indeed.
