Hi All

this is the first time ever that i've experienced a situation where deleting
a couple of records (ID 3 & 4, leaving ID 2 as the highest number) and then
compacting the database HASN'T reset the autonumber ID of the next new
record back to 3 ... but i had 6 machines today that all put the next record
in at #5. They were all Access 2000 machines running SR-1.

Any ideas on why compacting the database didn't reset the autonumber, and
more importantly, any ideas on how to re-set the autonumbers now?

BTW there is no data in any of the other tables - just this one.

Cheers

access auto numbers don't reset. period.
this is the problem access auto number usually caused by
deleting records.(a no-no. you should mark the records
somehow ie open, complete, canceled, inactive, active,
other, ect. this also prevents gaps in the number sequence)

have a look at the link i posted .. .it is actually called a "BUG" my MS ...
in this case we are entering test data and want to be able to delete the
data when the database is finished to put it into production - therefore we
would like to reset the IDs.

Cheers
