Compacted back end of database - got 'Reserved Error'

I compacted the back-end of a split database in which the front-end is an MDE and the back-end an MDB. After this (no other changes) am getting 'Reserved Error' (-1715) all over the place. Restored back end and it went away.

Any clues?
 
This may happen if you compact the database while someone still has it open
and active.
