Compact Flash Multiple Partitions

Good afternoon communnity,

This has to be an old question, but new to us. We have been successful
creating a bootable CF with a single partition and running EWF. The last
step is to create two partitions, the first has XPE/EWF and the second our
application. We have not been successful with multiple partitions. From the
browsing we've done it appears you need special tools. The CF we're using is
from Silicon Systems and we're waiting for a response from them. But we
would gladly entertain any suggestions from the communnity!

Regards,

Steve Wagner

I created multiple partitions on my Silicon Systems CF simply by using DOS
FDisk. Work fine with EWF.

My understanding is that to use multiple partitions on a CF card you
need the card to be connected to an IDE bus and the 'True IDE' bit set
in the card's configuration register.

If the card is on a PCMCIA/Cardbus bus, or if the 'True IDE' it is not
set the card will appear as a removeable device and windows will
neither create, nor use anything other than the first partition.

I don't know why this information isn't better published - I was quite
upset when I learnt I was wasting my time with a pcmcia adapter (search
for ewf flash partition in this group.)
From memory Sandisk, Silicon Systems and Simpletech all have software
tools to set the 'True IDE' bit, but you can generally order a slightly
different part number to have them pre-configured that way.

Sandisk provides a utility to reconfigure their CF cards as fixed disks
instead of removable drive. Delkin manufactures cards that are configured as
fixed disks out of the box.
