Comp wont boot

My friend told me that an I.E. icon appeared and said that his updates
were ready to install .. then said that it needed to reboot to finish the
update.

Now .. he can get the F8 menu up .. but .. it just reboots from
whatever choice he picks .. i.e. .. it wont even get to the
command prompt ..

anything we can do ..

Well, you can try a repair install by using the install CD and boot from
the CD if this is a NT based O/S like XP. The repair install will
install over the top of the existing O/S, which might correct the problem.

The repair/upgrade over the top will lay the O/S down again but won't
destroy anything that exist on the HDD such as other
programs/application that have been already installed on the machine and
will leave everything as is.

But it will wipe out the SP and any hot fixes and they will have to be
applied again.

For the most part, the NG is fine but there is one lunatic loose in it.

If you are talking about winxp you can run the xp recovery console
from the installation cd. From there you can run fixmbr, fixboot,
chkdsk and other diagnostics.

If you don't have the cd you can download a 6 floppy disk set to boot
to the recovery console from here.

If you prefer or if you can't boot from a floppy, some hunting around
on google will likely throw up some locations where you can download
a .iso image of the recovery console cd so you can make yourself a
bootable cd. It's about a 7MB download. This is what I did but I can't
remember the specific url.
