There are two options for resolving this if you don't have an actual XP CD.
In fact, if you had your recovery disk, it likely would only offer you the
option to restore your setup to factory fresh condition, wiping the hard
drive and costing you all your files if you don't have a backup.
The two options:
First-Boot the system, start tapping F8, when the menu appears, select "Last
Known Good Configuration," and press enter.
If that doesn't resolve it or offer more than just a temporary fix, boot the
system, start tapping F8, select Safe Mode from the menu and press enter.
When you get to Safe Mode, accept the option to use System Restore and look
for a restore point prior to when this began.
There are no magic bullets and without a retail XP CD or a non customized
OEM CD supplied with the system, one that includes the full compliment of
tools, your options are very limited. At some point, you are going to have
to bite the bullet. At the very least, you should see if you can get a
replacement from your manufacturer as at some point you will likely need to
reinstall. Should that occur, what then do you plan to do if you don't even
have a recovery disk?
