when turning on computer it goes to detyecting IDE
drives. Computer is not finding my cdrom drive or dvdrw
drive. Computer has been working fine for last 3 months.
Problem occurred this week.

fdisk /mbr

This would have no effect upon optical drives which have no master
boot record. Fdisk is only for hard drives. The problem is
occurring before the operating system is loaded so anything you do
subsequently would be in vain. Sometimes in the process of adding
memory or a new fan to the CPU, cables can be loosened or tilted.
Additionally, if drives are specifically itemized in the CMOS, they
may not be detected explicitly during the POST.

Are the drives listed in the Device Manager once Windows XP is
loaded? Have you flashed your BIOS recently? Check in the BIOS
Setup that all IDE devices are detected automatically and are not
User Defined. User Defined drives are not automatically detected
during the POST. Some people do this to save a few seconds during
POST but forget to update it when devices change.
