I'm having this really strange problem. I recently had to rebuild one of our
Windows XP PC's. We run a windows 2000 domain enviroment. After rebuilding
and rejoing to the domain I have been unable to ping the XP PC from my
machine. The XP machine can ping me without a problem. The IP address is
correct when I try to ping it by name. I tried to pping by straight IP with
no luch. I went as far as dejoing the PC from the domian, deleting the
computer account from active directory, delete any references in DNS or WINS
and hen rejoing with no luck.

I have windows firewall turned off.

Have you checked firewall settings on the XP computer?

Hello George,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I suggest you check the following suggestions:

1. Check the network card to see if it is working fine.
2. Check if the issue occurs on other machines when they ping the Windows
XP machine.
3. Use IPconfig /all command to check the IP configuration on the
problematic machine to see if all IP addresses have been assigned.
5. Ping the loopback address (127.0.0.1) to ensure that TCP/IP is operating
properly on your system.
6. Ping the IP address of the local (your PC's) network adapter card. This
will ensure that TCP/IP is bound to the adapter and will provide a check
for duplicate IP addresses.
7. Ping the default gateway on your network. This verifies that the local
subnet is functioning and that packets addressed to other subnets will
reach the default gateway.
8. Ping a computer beyond the default gateway, to ensure that packets will
be delivered to remote networks.

Please let us know the results step by step.

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

The network card appears to work fine. I can get to everything on the
network without a probelm as well as the internet.

I've pinged the loopback without an isue
I've pinged the IP address of the NIC card no probelm
I've pinged the default gateway without a problem
I've ping a remote PC no problem

I've tried pinging the troubled PC from my machine as well as another and I
a m unable to get aresponse even the troubled to ping both of our machines
wthout having a problem.

This really has me stumped.

It turned out to be a windows firewall issue. For some reason the firewall
by defualt blocks echo requests. I disabled the firewall and everything
works. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply and let us know you have found the root cause.
